Oftentimes, a modem on the AS/400 is shared for several uses. You might use your Electronic Customer Support (ECS) modem for ECS, dial up to IBMLink, and dial in to another AS/400. Each of these usually uses a different line description. However, if one of the other lines is varied on, you won't be able to start the application you want. There needs to be an easy way to review what lines are attached to a given hardware resource.

Fortunately, there is. Use the Work with Hardware Resources (WRKHDWRSC) command and, in the Type parameter, use *CMN.

You'll see a screen similar to the one shown in 2. The screen shows each hardware resource and port. By placing a 5 next to one of the ports, you'll see all of the lines that use that port. You can review the status of the lines and see if any of them are varied on. It's the fastest way I know of to resolve modem sharing conflicts.
