Spool files can really waste space on your disk. The AS/400 stores spooled file data in physical file members in QSPL library. The members remain on the system even after printing and are removed only if they are not used after seven IPLs. Only up to 200 members are removed during an IPL. It is easy to see how keeping spool files on the OUTQ, and infrequent IPLs will make the QSPL library grow in size. You can use the following command to get the name and size of the spool data base file:

DSPOBJD QSPL/*ALL *ALL

The next command will display the number of members in the file:

DSPFD FILE(QSPL/filename) TYPE(*ATR)

For additional information, reference the OS/400 IPL section in Appendix B of the Backup and Recovery Guide (SC21-8079), and the Spooling Subsystem and Spooling Library sections in Chapter 6 of the Data Management Guide (SC21- 9658).
